Each residential address in a school district is zoned to a specific elementary, middle and high school, and students who live in those attendance zones have the right to attend those schools.
In most school districts, when a student wants to attend a school in a different attendance zone, he or she must fill out a transfer application and meet transfer criteria, which might include:
- Passing Grades
- Good Attendance
- Little or No Discipline Problems
- State Assessment Scores
In elementary schools, a transfer approval within the district depends on whether there are “seats” or space in a particular grade or classroom. In middle school and high school, the whole school might be “open” (accepting transfers) or “closed,” (not accepting transfers.)
In short, a transfer occurs when a student is approved to attend a school outside of his attendance zone which now includes expanded areas outside of CFBISD’s district boundaries.
There are also options in some districts, which include transferring to specific schools even if you live outside the district boundaries. In CFBISD, this is called Open Enrollment Transfers or Out of District Transfers. Students in specific “zones” are allowed to attend certain schools within our boundaries.
TRANSFERS FOR STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF CFBISD
If you live outside the district boundaries of CFBISD, you still may be able to attend and experience our awesome schools and programs. This type of transfer is called an “Open Enrollment Transfer” or an “Out of District Transfer”.
This type of transfer occurs when a student’s family lives in specified areas outside of the boundaries of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District.

Can a student outside the CFB school attendance zone also apply for any of the academy schools your district offers?
At this time, students outside the zone may only apply to academies at the campuses zoned for their open enrollment zone.
