Why Learning to Swim is Important for Your Child

“You made it all the way across! Way to go Bobby!” I said to my son as he showed me what he accomplished in swim lessons.

Our family is very active. We cycle, hike and swim. We even have a pool in our backyard. Our six-year-old son swims at his friend’s pool, our neighborhood pool, and attends a water park frequently with his day camp. An adult is with him every time he is near water, but he can’t just depend on us or the lifeguards to keep him safe. He needs to have the ability to save himself should he get in trouble in, near or around the water.

As he grows older, as a teenager, an adult and becomes a parent, he will meet water throughout his lifetime. The ability to swim is vital, not only for him, but potentially for others.

The Added Benefits of Learning to Swim

The thing about swimming is, it’s not just a skill they learn; it is much more than that. It can build character, teach responsibility, safety and instill confidence at a young age. Frightful children learning to conquer their fear of water can do wonders for a child. They learn what it means to work hard, push themselves and achieve a sense of accomplishment.

Why Swimming Lessons are Vital for Your Child

Swim lessons teach my child to respect the water while having fun! They teach them water safety, such as look before you leap, swim as a pair near a lifeguard’s chair, think so you don’t sink, reach or throw, don’t go and many more safety skills on top of learning to swim independently.

We chose the Farmers Branch Aquatics Center; they have a beautiful facility, qualified instructors who enjoy what they do, and kids learn so much while having a blast! The great part is their open availability for lessons all year-round. Summer sessions are offered mornings, evenings and weekends!

Opportunities for Swimmers

As my son and other children grow up, swimming can lead to other opportunities, such as swim team, scuba diving and lifeguarding. Not to mention the great health and fitness benefits related to swimming.

As a mother, I am teaching my son a set of life skills that he will have for the rest of his life. I believe that having confidence is important, and I love to remind my kids that they are able to accomplish anything and everything they set their minds to, swimming included.
